10 Creative Ways to Get Involved this Mandela Day
If you had the power to change the world, what would you do?
Give some thought to that answer.
No, really.
Stop. Think.
Write it down.
Why?
Because you do have the power to change the world. One small good deed at a time.
“It always seems impossible until it’s done” – Nelson Mandela
Take one look at the life legacy of Tata Madiba, and you will see 67 years of one man’s selfless service that revolutionalised a nation, rippling a fair fight for freedom across the entire world. So great was the good brought by one man to the globe, that in 2009 the United Nations declared Madiba’s birthday, 18 July, to be Mandela Day.
What is Mandela Day?
On this globally recognised day, rather than looking back and commemorating Nelson Mandela for his human rights efforts, we do what he has asked, and pay it forward by dedicating just 67 minutes of our day to serving others. One minute for each year Madiba spent fighting for equal rights and opportunities for all.
“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” – Nelson Mandela
On this day we are encouraged to take action and inspire real change in the world, in any small way that we can. For South Africans in particular, this is an opportunity to dedicate our time and effort to continuing the good work that Madiba began. With just one small deed we can take a sustainable step to alleviating poverty and inequality in South Africa, uplifting the rights of all beings, and making our country and planet a better place for all to live.
How can I get involved on Mandela Day?
On 18 July all it takes is 67 minutes of your time to make a real change in the world. How you spend these 67 minutes is entirely up to you. Choose a cause or action that is close to your heart, something that inspires passion in you; be creative and share what you love with those around you.
