What is #GivingTuesdaySA About?
Giving Tuesday SA encourages all South Africans to give to a cause in whichever way they choose leading up to #GivingTuesdaySA on 27 November 2018.
It’s a simple idea. Just find a way for your family, your community, your company or organisation to come together to give something more. Then tell everyone you can about how you are giving.
Giving Tuesday South Africa formally launched on Oct 30, 2018. We were joined by the global Giving Tuesday team, with Asha Curran and Henry Timms, Co-Founders of #GivingTuesday, which raised $300 million dollars in 2017.
“It is not a movement unless it moves without you.” – Henry Timms
This is the notion of #GivingTuesdaySA and we encourage you all to take the concept and adapt it to your specific context. Asha refers to this as an exciting global study on generosity innovation. Join us on Nov 27, and help us celebrate generosity worldwide in a creative way that suits your organisation or community.
Here are a few ways to get started:

Terry Pheto, Kabelo Mabelane & Danny K, Brent Lindeque, and Bokang M Tshabalala have all offered their giving stories, in support of #GivingTuesdaySA. They share how they support initiatives and give hope through Save the Children South Africa, the Shout Foundation, the Good Things Guy, and the Bokang Montjane Foundation respectively.
Already entered the contest and still looking to get involved?
1.) Are you a community group? Come together with civic leaders and raise money for many non-profit organisations in your community. Ask who wants to be involved, and then split the funding evenly between those who contributed.
3.) Are you an individual? Consider raising funds for a charity of your choice through the many online platforms like GivenGain. Consider volunteering in your neighborhood and giving back through Brownie Points, For Good, or GEM Project. Consider posting on social media about the cause you choose to support and use your voice to share their good work.
4.) Are you a leader in your business? Consider launching payroll giving to give employees a chance to give to a cause of their choosing through The Giving Organisation.
5.) Are you a Board Member? Send thank you notes to all of your top partners and simply give thanks on #GivingTuesday. Shout out the organisation you support on social media – bring some much needed attention to the important work they do.
6.) Do you represent a corporation? Share a press release of all company giving – include payroll giving, hours given, goods donated, and highlight the organisations that you support on social media for the day.
7.) Are you a leader at a non-profit organisation? Consider how you can use your influence in your community to support other organisations like yours. Not sure how? What about asking kids to run a market day, and donate any proceeds to another non-profit organisation. Can’t raise money? Have your beneficiaries (young or old) do something in their communities and give back themselves.
“The tagline of this global day is that everyone has something to give. It is our hope that you can find a way to be generous on 27 Nov.”
Considering that 82% of organisations try something new on Giving Tuesday, and since it is the first year in South Africa, this is your chance to really stretch your limits, and give. Visit our website to learn more
