Making Everyday Mandela Day

Individuals and businesses around our country have adopted Mandela Day as an opportunity to celebrate the life of former President Nelson Mandela by doing small acts of kindness for those who are less fortunate.

This year we celebrated Mandela Day and Month under unique circumstances but despite these tough times, we witnessed love and hope for this country like never before, proving the Mandela spirit is very much alive.

Loads of you headed over to Brownie Points – a digital platform that links individuals, companies (big or small) and communities to NPO’s and good causes, and did what you could in your own capacity whether it was clearing out cupboards to donate clothing and household items that could be cherished by those in need, donating earnings even during these uncertain times, or buying a few extra food items at the local grocery store to fill hungry bellies.

“There can be no greater gift than that of giving one’s time and energy to helping others without expecting anything in return.” – Nelson Mandela

With the help of our innovative platform, companies were also able to give back despite COVID-19 and many even increased their staff engagement and donations.

Take a look at some of our favourite campaigns we ran with our Brownie Points clients and partners this Mandela Month:

Trails and Nature for Madiba Campaign

Love our Trails is an environmental organisation that has registered with Brownie Points which grants them access to data collected on the site as well as the ability to create, track and reward the success of their campaigns.

Together with the partnership and support of Cape Union Mart and Vida e Caffè, Love our trails used the platform to create the Trails And Nature For Madiba Campaign. Under this campaign, they formed different causes or ways people could give back.

These causes included:
• Donate R67 to Stellenbosch trail fund
• Donate R67 to the Cape Leopard Trust
• Enjoy the day out on some of South Africas breathtaking trails and pick up trash along the way.

After participating in one or more of the causes above, volunteers then logged their efforts on the Brownie Points Platform where they were awarded a Vida e coffee voucher.

Korbicom’s Virtual Mandela Day

Korbicom is a local medium size Software Company that reached out to Brownie Points for solutions to manage staff volunteering and donations for their annual Mandela Day initiative. Brownie Points had recently launched, Sponsored Campaigns, this is ideal for companies like Korbicom who run a handful of charitable initiatives a year. A Sponsored Campaign gives a company the benefits of tracking, reporting and rewarding good deeds.

Korbicom created a Virtual Mandela Day campaign that included 10 exciting ways for staff to make a difference.

These causes included:

    • Bhongolethu Foundation: Donate sanitizer, hoola hoops or money to help keep kids safe in school.
    • Night Haven Shelter: Sponsor 5 bed nights for R67
    • Night Haven Shelter: Donate a warm blanket or clothes this winter.
    • Planting something.

Not only did Korbicom unite their team but they almost doubled their usual staff engagement, from 20% to 36%

“Thank you to Brownie Points for helping us run our first-ever virtual Mandela Day! The team were super helpful and efficient, and the virtual platform helped us to raise more than double what we have in previous years. Our staff really enjoyed being able to share the love and get into the spirit of giving. We were able to help The Haven Night Shelter and the Bhongolethu Foundation during the campaign, as well as uplift fellow colleagues. It was really important for us to give back to our communities during this exceptionally difficult time. The end of the campaign has left us with happy and grateful hearts. After all, Mandela said it best: “There can be no greater gift than that of giving one’s time and energy to others without expecting anything in return.”

With the help of our partners and beneficiary organisations we were able to create and support 102 causes! Check out our Mandela Month overview to see what we were able to achieve.

Our goal at Brownie Points is to make everyday Mandela day which is more important now than ever before, and we do this by making it easy and possible for everyone to make a difference.
