Success Story: Random Acts of Kindness
This week we interviewed Marc Buhrer, just an ordinary South African with a big heart and a big desire to change humanity for the better. Read below his story on creating his Dare to Share charity and Game for Humanity, a card game inspiring positive acts of kindness throughout communities.
1. Why did you start Dare to Share?
I decided on my 31st birthday that instead of hosting a larger party like my 30th, I would invite about 20 friends to cook at The Haven Nightshelter in Napier Street. Instead of presents, we brought ingredients to cook for 220 guests between that shelter and their Woodstock branch.
Dare to Share aims to transparently assist with shortfalls of 38 registered charities in the Western Cape. We assist in sectors such as orphanages, centres for abused women and children, schools, old aged homes, animal shelters and temporary housing developments. We also work closely with disaster management and the City of Cape Town. In addition to this we feed over 60 families weekly and provide basic toiletries and clothing.
2. What’s Dare to Share’s biggest success story so far?
Wow, we’ve had so many! We’ve created sustainable jobs, provided uniforms for an entire school and assisted the unfortunate victims of fires in Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay and Knysna, to name a few. I’m also incredibly proud of Dare to Share working with food technologists to develop our own low cost solution to hunger. We’ve created a soy and dried vegetable based ready-to-eat meal which, with added hot water, in 20 mins you have a nutritional meal to feed 4 adults and it costs less than R20. We’ve assisted so many with this, and continue to have meals sponsored and donated to those in need.
3. Now, what is Game for Humanity?
Game for Humanity is a card game whereby you pick a card and complete the random act of kindness written on it. Once you’ve completed this, you give the card to the recipient of that kind gesture and he/she completes that task for someone else, and so on.
I’ve always had a passion for wanting to share kindness, love and appreciation, and so was trying to figure out a fun and tangible way for members of the public to get involved in this. I decided to focus on using random acts of kindness to create positive ripples of change.
Through easy and fun tasks the cards create a positive mentality proving that giving is fun and should be an inspirational lifestyle to all, especially the youth.
The game has had an overwhelmingly positive reaction since its launch late 2016. We began with the Community Edition and have since extended to a School Edition, encouraging kids aged 8-15yrs old, to promote anti-bullying, anti-racism, appreciation of education, respecting your elders and recycling. This has also been incredibly well received by parents, teachers and principals, acknowledging positive change in the attitudes of scholars.
4. What are your future plans for Game for Humanity?
Game for Humanity is growing weekly! The amazing element is that absolutely anyone can become a retailer. We build a 100% markup ensuring it is worth the retailers time AND they become part of such a radical movement of positive change, everyone is a winner. We have also recently offered corporates the opportunity to customise their own packs of cards in their corporate identity. This is an incredible marketing and CSI tool for any brand to maintain a favourable position in the public eye.
5. What advice can you give those wanting to give back?
Identify your passion, follow the protocol to register your own NPO or NGO even if takes a few months, spend time with likeminded people who want to achieve the same positive change in that sector and never forget to celebrate the small victories.
Remember that spending a few minutes just speaking to a stranger can make their day and it really does not take away from yours, time is the biggest donation we are able to give anyone.
Follow us on our Dare to Share Facebook page and keep updated with our current initiatives and events. Due to the incredible growth of late, we will be redesigning our website to provide volunteers a hassle free user experience when assisting us with projects.
