What You Can Do To #BeatCoronavirus

Coronavirus has hit the world. Hard.

Since the start of the virus in China 3 months ago, it has spread to over 150 countries and has affected almost every aspect of our lives. From work to school to going to the supermarket, all our activities are impacted by this pandemic. And a lot of us are nervous, to say the least.

While countries like China and Italy have already reached peak emergency status, South Africa will still see the full potential of Covid-19. The biggest risk we face as a nation is the overwhelm of our healthcare systems. Which is why we need to make sure we slow the spread of this virus as much as possible and #FlattenTheCurve.

Brownie Points is launching the #BeatCoronavirus campaign to make sure everyone is informed and can do their part to slow down the spread of this pandemic. We encourage all nonprofit and community organisations, as well as businesses, to add their relevant causes to this campaign to allow the community to support the effort to #BeatCoronavirus.

For now, you can show your commitment to the following simple actions by signing up to the ones relevant to you:

1. Know better

Be aware, educate yourself and stay updated. We’ve included some links and are happy to take any suggestions for more helpful resources at [email protected].

2. Wash your hands

Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.

3. Avoid touching your face

Avoiding touching of eyes, nose and mouth. This is one of the main ways to contract the virus.

4. Stay at home

If you can, stay at home and self-isolate.

5. Maintain a healthy distance

Maintain at least 1 metre distance between yourself and everyone else.

6. Greet using your elbow

If you want to remain polite and want to greet, use your elbow.

7. Cover your mouth

Cover your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.

8. Protect at-risk people

Help protect members of your community who are at risk to contract the virus. Share your hand sanitiser, hand wash, gloves and/or masks.

9. Help the elderly with their shopping

Do the shopping for your elderly relative, neighbour or acquaintance, so they don’t have to.

10. Get tested

If you think you might have contracted the virus, you should call the NICD helpline on 0800 029 999. See the ‘Get tested‘ page for more information.

11. Help our doctors fight Coronavirus

Donate to Gift of the Givers to help support medical responders on the ground.

12. CoronaCare for South Africa

Donate to CoronaCare to support organisations on the ground helping those in need.

Call to all employers

We urge all companies and employers, formal or informal, to show that we are a caring community, and to tell employees to stay at home. We hope that companies will be able to support their employees further by assisting them financially, such as giving them paid leave to make sure their employees’ are not just physically safe, but economically too. The unfortunate truth is that many cannot afford to stay at home. Given the choice between staying at home to curb the spread of Coronavirus and feeding their families, most will choose the latter. Which is why it is important to at least consider giving your employees paid leave for the next few weeks to ensure we not only #FlattenTheCurve and not overwhelm our healthcare system, but also to make your employees feel safe to stay at home. Show your commitment as a caring employer by signing up to the causes below:

Share this campaign with your friends, family and community so we can #BeatCoronavirus.
